David Blain in InvestmentNews: Buy and Hold Strategy
October 28, 2008: Financial reporter, Jeff Benjamin, spoke with David Blain about the continued viability of the old “buy-and-hold” strategy of investing given the recent turmoil in the financial markets. Mr. Blain recently has changed the asset allocation in most of his portfolios to as much as 60% cash. “My preference would be to buy and hold forever, but explaining to a client that they haven’t made any money for 10 or 20 years doesn’t go over very well.”
Though he doesn’t attempt to “time” the market, David is a student of market history and makes many of his investment decisions based on the repetition of historic trends. “People will say they have a long-term time horizon, but most advisers’ memories only exist from around 1982 to the present,” he said. “If you stayed in the market from 1966 to 1982, an investor would have lost 11% after inflation.”
